How Your Child Can Break Into the Music Business

How Your Child Can Break Into the Music BusinessHow Your Child Can Break Into the Music BusinessSo, you think your child could be a big music star?Everyone says so. But how can you get labels and managers interested in your childs music? Is there a sure path to break into show business? These are big questions without easy answers, including whether you should help your child break into the music industry at a young age. Heres how to go about trying to establish your child within the industry, and what you need to worry about along the way. 1. Get Realistic About Your Childs Talent First and foremost, you need to enter this process with a great deal of realism and pragmatism, and sharing that attitude with your child will help them develop the thick skin required to sustain a career in an entertainment field. Does your child have musical talent? Probably so. But heres the reality check Your friends and family are elend a good barometer of your childs talent. Dont assume anyone wh o hears your childs music will be as amazed as you are. Talented people get passed over in the music industry all the time, so even if your child is talented, theres a lot of luck involved in any entertainment field. Beprepared for how tough this process can be. 2. Get Help From Music Industry Insiders Child music stars tend to fall into the pop category, and most can benefit from the major label marketing machine. Major labels dont listen to unsolicited demos, so to get their attention, youre going to need representation. An entertainment lawyer or a manager can help you here. The best way to get their ear is to look for some kind of personal in with them. If your child has recorded in a studio, someone at the studio may be able to put you in touch with someone who can help. Someone in your family or circle of friends might have a connection that can help. There is no substitute for da sagst du was of mouth in the music industry. Try every angle you can to find some kind of ti e to someone who can help, and go for it. Sometimes, that angle just doesnt exist. The best thing you can do is try to tap into your local music community. Explain your situation and ask for recommendations of people they have encountered along the way. Someone you know almost certainly knows someone who knows someone. Find them. If all else fails, use the internet to find music management companies. Also, look for entertainment lawyers in your area. Cold calling a music management company can be hard, but follow their procedures for submitting music. Meet a few lawyers and a few managers and see who fits and who is enthusiastic about the music. Finding the right person here is critical. Once this team member is in place, they can help you get showcases and meetings with labels that can help you introduce your childs music to the public. Praise is good. Critiques and advice for improvement are even better. Dont ignore the constructive criticism and advice music industry professional s give you along the way because its not really what you want to hear. 3. Emphasize Education Over a Music Career Dont choose to chase a music career over your childs education. In addition to their traditional schooling, make music education a priority. Encourage them to dedicate extensive time to practice. Performance standards for a child star can be taxing they may need to be able to dance, sing, play an instrument and much more. Enroll them in appropriate classes so they can continue to develop their craft. notlage only will this help them continue to grow their talents, but these classes can be good places to make the all-important connections. It also will encourage a work ethic when your child sees that he gets out of the class only what he puts into it. 4. Dont (Just) Throw Money at the Problem Establishing a music career can be expensive. If you hire someone, like a manager or an entertainment attorney, there will be fees involved. But you can avoid throwing money at the wrong things. Be wary of scams, and of anyone who wants you to pay for something upfront. For instance, there is rarely a good reason for you to pay to take part in a local showcase that promises industry insiders. Reputable showcases seldom have entry fees. That goes for local talent shows as well. If the fees are minimal, a showcase may be worth it just for the stage time. But dontexpect them to be the source of a big break, and dont spend a fortune on them. Likewise, never pay a music industry consultant or anyone else a huge sum of money in return for guaranteed results. You cant buy music industry stardom, and no one worth working with will make you any guarantees in the music industry. 5. There Are No Easy Answers in the Music Industry The bottom line is that there are no easy answers and no one easy path to establishing a music career for your child. The best thing you can do is adopt a realistic attitude and a lot of patience while you search for the right partne r to introduce your child to major label opportunities. Along the way, encourage them to value their education and work hard to continue to nurture their musical talent. If there are open mic opportunities in your town that are age appropriate, then let your child get comfortable as a performer as you meet your local music community. These connections can help you later. A solid music career requires a good foundation. Now is the time to make sure youre building that. It will give you and your child much more stability down the line.

How Many Characters Do You Need to Communicate with Gen Y

How Many Characters Do You Need to Communicate with Gen Y How Many Characters Do You Need to Communicate with Gen Y Exchange Communication Preferences and StylesEngage young professionals in a conversation about the different contexts your kollektiv communicates in and what each persons preferences are in your department. Make sure everyone on the team knows what the best way is to share large quantities of information, communicate last minute or time-sensitive information, and how to communicate after hours. As important as it is to integrate young professionals into your workspace, you also need to be respectful of their communication preferences. If they prefer receiving a Facebook message for time-sensitive information, then figure out how you can work with them. If you want young employees to flex to meet you where you are, make sure you model the importance of this practice by flexing to meet them where they are.Weed Out Vocalized ThinkingYoung professionals are known for voc alizing their thinking, i.e., um, you know, so, like, etc. To guard against this, remind them that communication is not a race and to think before they speak- especially at work. Young professionals tend to lose their train of thought when spouting off their ideas. One strategy I like to encourage is the stop-and-smile. Basically, when one feels that the brain and mouth are out of alignment, she stops, smiles, breathes, finds the next idea, and then continues on. This helps employees hide brain freezes and project confidence and competence in all situations.Curb People Pleasing and PuffingMillennials often strive to make themselves into the people they think others want them to be by making choices that are big and bold. It is your job to intervene before over-talking and people-pleasing become habit. You should also try to help your young professionals eliminate puffing. Your new hires will want to share why they are great and what makes them qualified for your most plum opportunit ies- but stop them You can remind them of a great mantra, Who I Am Is Not What I Achieve. Make sure they know that its not about a title or getting featured in the paper. Its about the choices they make in their thinking and behavior and the results they achieve. This will support them to be transparent with their communication, and use it to forward organizational goals.Gen Y communicates differently then any generation before. Do you have any additional tips for better communication with young professionals?

What to Say (and What Not To) When a Friend Gets Laid Off

What to Say (and What Not To) When a Friend Gets Laid OffWhat to Say (and What Not To) When a Friend Gets Laid OffSeveral years ago at my fathers funeral, people lined up to pay their respects, including Pat, one of the best bosses Ive ever had. I adored Pat She was a smart lady, a great mentor, and a real motivator.Ill never forget all she taught me You know what you should do? Take all that great knowledge about marketing and start your own business. It would really show off your smarts and you could even take some of the clients from this placeAs helpful as these types of suggestions may sound (and as great as they might be), your comrade is probably not ready to hear them. In fact, what he or she may be hearing instead is Figure out something awesome- and fast, or You could have done so much here, but you just didnt get it done, or, worse I know your puppy just got ran over by a car why dont you just go get a new one?People need time to get used to the concept of moving on. When youre let go, you suddenly no longer belong, youre no longer part of a team, and you no longer have a place to go from Monday through Friday. Replacing this comfortable routine with suggestions of the unknown doesnt really help. At least not yet.2.Point to Possibilities Outside of OurselvesWalt Disney was actually fired from the Kansas City Star for not being creative enough. Multi-billionaire author J.K. Rowling was let go from her job as a secretary. Oprah Winfrey was pulled off the air, called unfit for television by a Baltimore producer. Home Depot came about because its owners were cut from a no-longer-in-existence home improvement chain. Even New Yorks Mayor Michael Bloomberg was squeezed out of his job at Citigroup. And the list goes on and on.The point is Reminding your colleague of people we all respect and admire who triumphed in spite of their dismissals can help him or her focus on possibilities without having to look inward at the current circumstances. It gives a bit o f perspective, helping this partie to realize that he or she is not to blame for the layoff- and that this, too, shall pass.3.Stick Around, But Say NothingNo matter the individual or the circumstances, being let go from a job stings. Feelings and emotions closely align with the well-known five stages of grief denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In addition, financial worries, societal standings, and self-worth are often negatively impacted.During such times, your co-worker, your friend, or your family member needs you to be there, but he or she doesnt necessarily need you to say anything. Remember While the worst thing you can do is disappear from someones life and shun him or her (which often does happen), the second worst thing is to say something that creates an even deeper wound. So, stick around, and if you arent sure what to say, just say nothing. What this person really needs is to talk it out and for you to listen with both ears. So give him or her a hug, l ook into his or her eyes, and nod with understanding and validation. Itll do a great deal of good and be more than enough to ease your colleagues transition.Photo of woman laid off courtesy of Shutterstock.

Why Have You Been Out of Work So Long

Why Have You Been Out of Work So LongWhy Have You Been Out of Work So LongWhatever you do, have an answer to the question - why have you been out of work so long? Whatever you say, dont answer, Looking for a job. When interviewing candidates who have been out of work for extended periods of time, a human resources manager will almost always ask this question Why have you been out of work so long?Just as often, they find the candidate on the other side of the desk baffled by the question and ill-prepared to respond. They look like theyre on trial, sitting in the witness stand during cross-examination, worried that the jury and onlookers will make the correlation that silence equals some form of guilt. At the very least, we must assume you are not prepared for the days events. Its the saatkorn whether you are doing a phone screen or in-person interview with a hiring manager. Job seekers, listen up If nothing else, please have a response to this question - Why have you been out of work so long? Here are some viable responsesI decided to start a businessI am an officer of XYZ organizationI took some college courses to stay current in my careerI am currently researching XYZ subject (ensure that it has business relevance)I volunteer at a local missionI started a networking organization to help those out of workI decided to coach a season of my childs baseball leagueAlso consider something more specific such as a human resources manager who might volunteer with an organization that helps others get their resumes up to par, and assist other job seekers with interviewing skills. If you work in finance or accounting you might help folks at your local church prepare their income taxes, work out a problem with back taxes or establish a family budget.Whatever you do, say something to demonstrate you know enough about the hiring process to have expected this question. Whatever you say, dont answer, Looking for a job. Thats the wrong answer. When asked this question if your o nly response is that, Ive been looking for a job, and its been one to two years and you still have not found one although your only focus has been on finding a job, this leaves the hiring manager wondering, well, what is wrong with this candidate? Armed with this type of response, you can be almost certain that they will not select you as their new employee.Wherever you are in your career, theres an opportunity to utilize your skills regardless of whether or not you are getting paid. Hiring managers look on such activity as creative, innovative, philanthropic and energetic. If you can answer that you have taken your expertise and applied it to the betterment of others who might be in a rough predicament, it not only humanizes you to the hiring manager but shows that you are not solely focused on yourself or money. Now, who doesnt want this type of employee on their team?

People in this industry spend the most money on work clothes

People in this industry spend the most money on work clothesPeople in this industry spend the most money on work clothesCertain industries require people to dress differently, but which industries have employees shelling out some major money on work attire? You think it would be those who work in the actual fashion industry, right? After all, in The Devil Wears Prada Andy Sachs didnt start succeeding at work until she upgraded her wardrobe from oh no to au couture. But according to asurvey of2,000 Americans about fashion in the workplace from Trunk Club, people in the broadcast industry spend the most money on clothes with an average of $129.38 per month and then followed by accounting at $118.01 per month. To give you a little context the survey found that 60% of those asked only spend $50 or less on work attire per month.Though you would think that people in broadcast, especially those on air, wouldnt have their wardrobe provided to them but that is most likely only at the top news outlets. For people working in local broadcast news they are usually wearing their own clothes that they purchase. A few years ago Slate put out a piece on on-air female meterologists being obsessed with a dress from Amazon for the price point and the variety because so few of them had wardrobe budgets.Sometimes what to wear is biggest stress of my job, the Weather ChannelsJen Carfagnosaid in the article. Dont look too old, or too young. Too tight will make you look like ready for the dance club. Too baggy will make you look frumpy.Black every day is boring. Patterns are tough with the lights and camera. Staying wrinkle-free is tough. How many styles of red dresses are there anyway?Dressing downAccounting seems a bit surprising but perhaps it is because 50% of the people in this industry say they feel judged when they dress more casually. Other industries that feel judged for dressing down are gasthaus/hospitality workers (45%), finance (45%) and realtors (42%.)The survey also found that most people dont feel comfortable dressing down at a new job until they have been there for at least two months unless you work in telecommunications and then you start going casual a few days into the new gig.Hopefully you are in the right industry if you like dressing casual

How to Announce Starting a New Job Strategically - The Muse

How to Announce Starting a New Job Strategically - The MuseHow to Announce Starting a New Job StrategicallySo youre changing jobs. Thats exciting Youve probably realized you need to have an internal succession plan- but in addition, you also should spend a good amount of time preparing your external communications plan. That is, how youre going to announce the move to your network, industry, and the world. Why? Well, its a great chance to talk about your new and former employers, frame your accomplishments in the best way possible, and lage your move as the exciting news that it is- all important parts of building your brand.I recently left JESS3, a data visualization firm I co-founded in 2006, to join the founding team of Guide, a tech startup focused on turning online news and social streams into video, and I just went through this process myself. Here are the sequential strategies I found useful.Dont Leave Digital Crumbs Before Youre Ready to AnnounceFirst things first Dont give an y clues of your departure on your social media profiles before youre actually ready to announce it. While it may seem obvious leid to check in on foursquare when youre out interviewing for a new job, you should also avoid friending, following, or Linking-In with your potential new boss and teammates. While it may be tempting to stay in touch or follow up via social media, keep it to email- or better yet, a flossewritten note. Why be so paranoid? As Jay-Z famously said The streets is watching. Any swarm of new friends or connections would have surely tipped my hand early. So, only when the news that I joined Guide welches finally public (months after I accepted the job) did I finally friend my new team.Develop a Launch SequenceThis is commonly used lingo for rolling out a new product- but lets face it, in todays world, you and your brand are just as much a product as a new app or pair of sneakers. So you need to have a well-laid-out plan that is tightly sequenced around the when, what , and where (more details on all of this in a bit)When youre going make your announcement. This should be timed down to the minute, as information will quickly spread and you want to own the message as much as possible. What you want to convey (or talking points, in media training speak).Where you will make the announcement- which will require you to take stock of every single social media profile you have ever owned. Your core social profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are no-brainers. But remember that time you signed up for SlideShare and AngelList? Yep, you need to update your information there and there, too.Announce Your Departure, Then Pause, Then Announce Your New RoleI recommend first creating a stand-alone announcement about your departure that pays homage to your team and now former employer- then a separate announcement detailing your new role. There are no hard or fast rules about duration between announcing youve left and what you are doing next, but do try to g ive it a little bit of breathing room. It is not only respectful to both companies, but it also builds some suspense and interest about whats coming next.I went seven weeks in between thanking and saluting the JESS3 team and announcing at Guide. A similar approach, but shorter timeframe, was executed by my good friend Joe Chernov, who thanked and saluted Eloqua on a Friday and then announced his new role at Kinvey that following Monday. Here are a few things to consider when drafting your first postShow reverence and gratitude Think about what you are going to miss the most and what you enjoyed the most, and make this the focus. Its the classy thing to do and will make everyone involved feel good.Keep it positive No matter what terms youre leaving on, never go negative. If you find that you cannot show reverence and gratitude, then keep it short and neutral (I am leaving X today and am excited to share what is next).Include timing If you are going to have a space between your departu re and your new gig, make sure to share this so that you can build suspense, while also ensuring people wont be checking in with you on an hourly basis. The sequence for your departure post should look like thisAnchor the information on your blog or a Tumblr post.At the saatkorn time, share it out on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.Point back to the post as you email friends, family, and colleagues. Then, put together your new gig post. Along similar lines, you should be positive and show your excitement about whats next. Youll also want to link back to the departure post for context. Update Your Title on All Your Social Profiles (At the Same Time)Once youve made both announcements, get ready to update your profiles across the web. Open a tab in your browser for every social profile you own, then, one right after another, paste all the new information in the correct fields, triple check it is correct, and then fire away. I highly recommend listening to Tchaikovskys 1812 Overture Final e while you are doing this- the build and the cymbals really make you feel like you are doing something monumental. Because for you and your career, you areNote If you are like me and are planning on taking some time off, you should put a placeholder on your social profiles. For me, it was saying that I was going to be the COO for a startup in stealth mode- for you it might be that you are going to be a Director at a technology company or that youre an entrepreneur.Consider a Media Outreach PlanDepending on your role, industry, and seniority, engaging the media around the news of your move might make sense. How do you go about reaching out to reporters? Unless you are entering the C-Suite at a Fortune 500 company, I recommend doing all of your own outreach. Who better to talk about whats next for you than, well, you?Target blogs and news sites in your industry and outlets that cover people on the move type news, making sure to align your pitch to the right reporter in your region an d area of expertise. Although there are no real rules regarding what qualifies you for being coverage-worthy, having 8-10 years of experience or having been recognized for a significant contribution to your industry would be a good benchmark. This is also a good time to go after a guest post or two to talk about your move and share insights (just like I am doing here meta). Dont be discouraged if there arent a lot of bites on your pitch, as reporters are incredibly busy and your news might not yet be big enough for them to cover. But dont worry, someday it will be.Brace Yourself for When the Updates Hit Your Social GraphIn my experience, not only are you spreading the news, but your network will be, too, as your updates are liked, retweeted, and shared. As the news spreads like wildfire, be ready for an inbound wave of interest, questions and, perhaps the best part a bunch of congrats. In all the planning I did, I never planned for the outpouring of positivity- and it was the greates t feeling in the world.
